The project “Interoperable Research Infrastructure for Managing Sustainable Grid Cells” (IRI4SGC) is a joint research project from partners from the European Union (EU) and the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) region. The six participating universities Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences, Graz University of Technology, Federal University of Amazonas Brazil, Universidad Mayor de San Andrés Bolivia, Universidad Tecnológica de Panamá and the associated partner university Universidad Tecnológica La Salle Nicaragua investigate the inter- and transdisciplinary challenges of technical and economic integration of decentralized energy systems. Clean energy transition with a high share of renewable energy can lead to problems in the grid security of the electrical grids. This is due to volatile feed-in of renewable energy with simultaneous high loads from dynamic consumers, e.g. electric vehicles, as well as prosumers. To avoid this, autonomous control of energy cells and recommendations for actions and algorithms for the grid operators are being developed. A highly versatile and scalable infrastructure is needed to reproduce and test an exact image of the real grid. For this purpose, the existing laboratories will be virtually connected in this project and a secure energy data exchange environment will be established. All the participating parties are able to operate the joint
RI remotely and profit from the knowledge and experience of the other partners. This new collaborative approach supports the idea of durable and sustainable products and helps reduce the need for resources. The cross-continental connection between the EU and LAC regions and the exchange of competences and expertise are at the focus of addressing the challenges of the clean energy transition in all participating and considered regions.
